In January, we launched our latest project, supporting displaced young women to feel confident accessing Higher Education in partnership with Surrey University Widening Participation and Outreach.
We spent three days visiting three Surrey universities; the University of Surrey, the University of the Creative Arts and Royal Holloway. We explored what going to university would look like, whether that be the practicalities of study and university life or the pathways available for those planning to apply.
The first day was spent at the University of Surrey, listening to talks on various pathways, participating in taster sessions and touring the campus. It was wonderful to get some hands-on lab experience and participate in a drama workshop.
A real highlight was the session at Royal Holloway, University of London. The beautiful Founders building, the chapel and the grounds blew us away. We spent the morning with StoryFutures Academy, using scanners to create avatars. The activity inspired creativity and discussions about the potential of virtual reality and its role in the future.
We enjoyed a taster session in the Electrical Engineering department, where the challenge was to create a tiny Time Counter with bulbs and a buzzer that flash and click every second. It was a much quieter activity because we were all so engrossed.
We had a brilliant few days and left feeling inspired and ready to start planning routes into Higher Education.
Very grateful to all Universities involved for this fantastic opportunity.
