On Sunday 9 December 2018 Big Leaf Foundation joined forces with Surrey Arts and the Academy for Contemporary Music to record a festive single as part of Surrey Arts 'I Speak Music' project. The single, entitled Whatever You Believe, is sung, performed and recorded by a mix of refugees, young people from the Academy for Contemporary Music and local community members and is a collaboration of more than 80 people.
Composer, Jim Pinchen from Surrey Arts, said: "Music in its essence is something we all have in common. It's everywhere, from the rhythm of our first heartbeat through to family events and it can bring us together in a unique and safe way."
We continue to be inspired by the joy and friendship expressed by everyone involved in the recording.
"It's fantastic, it's the first time I've sung. I've met some new people and I'd really like to thank the people who made it possible." Young Syrian refugee who performed on the single
We're looking forward to bringing more musical collaboration projects to the heart of our community in the future. Any funds raised from this single will help to make this happen.
The single is available to download now. Any donations above the 25p download fee will help Big Leaf Foundation develop new music and arts projects that celebrate diversity and build understanding between displaced young people and host communities.
To support this project, please download the single and add a small donation. You can also view the video on YouTube below.
We'd like to express our heartfelt thanks to all our project partners, including our friends at Surrey Arts and the Academy for Contemporary Music for all of their hard work in bringing this project together, and to all the people who came along and sang with such warmth and energy.
