Big Leaf Foundation is a small charity working with displaced young people in Surrey. Our aim is to provide a nurturing programme of activities, projects and events that focus on combating social isolation and improving wellbeing for the young people we support.
Big Leaf is supporting more young people than ever before and something that can make all the difference to a young person arriving in the UK for the first time is to have someone there to help them as they begin the long journey of learning English.

About the role
We’re looking for Volunteer ESOL teachers to join our team, delivering engaging 1-2-1 lessons for displaced young people. We need people with experience teaching ESOL at different levels, who can motivate and inspire the young people, encouraging them to learn English.
- Salary: Voluntary (unpaid)
- Hours: 1-2 hours p/w (commitment of six months)
- Location: Online
- Reports to: Regional programme managers

Job description
KEY TASKS
- Deliver an online 1-2-1 ESOL session for a displaced young person (aged 16-21).
- Motivate and inspire the young people we support to actively engage in the activities/opportunities available to them.
- Ensure the health and safety of participants at all times.
- Record any incidents, accidents or safeguarding issues and make sure the trustees are informed.
- Provide feedback and contribute to project evaluations as required.
- Read, understand and agree to Big Leaf Foundation’s child protection & safeguarding policy.
- Liaise with other members of the Big Leaf Foundation team as needed to fulfil the role.

Essential
- ESOL qualification and experience.
- Strong empathy and communication skills.
- Experience of working with young people.
- Willingness to commit to one online session per week for six months.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Passion for the role and commitment to Big Leaf Foundation’s aims and values.
- Ability to speak one or more refugee community language.
- Previous experience of befriending and/or direct youth work with young refugees.
- Understanding of the issues and experiences of young people who are coming to the UK as asylum seekers and refugees.

- Safeguarding training.
- Supervision and support from one of the senior members of the team including specific training on ESOL for displaced young people and 1-2-1 and group supervision.
