East Surrey Casework Volunteer
We're a small team of passionate individuals, determined to support and empower displaced young people to know they are more than their status, and help them find their place within their local community.
About the role
We’re looking for a volunteer Caseworker to join our expanding team. You will work one-to-one with displaced young people and provide support with research, liaison and administration tasks, working closely with a Caseworker in order to provide a consistent service to our young people.
Demand for our Casework service is growing exponentially, and we are looking for someone to support our existing Casework team in East Surrey.
Salary: Voluntary (+expenses)
Location: Redhill & locations across East Surrey
Hours: 3-7 hours per week, day/times to fit in with existing commitments.
Commitment: Minimum six months
Reports to: East Surrey Caseworker

Job description
KEY TASKS
- Conduct personalised needs assessments with young people, using listening skills, appropriate questioning and building a trusted working relationship.
- Support young people to understand the factors affecting their situation, and work with them to develop an agreed action plan that addresses immediate and longer-term barriers. Continue to support them through progress and setbacks.
- Record information in an accurate and timely manner using Big Leaf’s online database.
- Work closely with Caseworker to ensure appropriate follow up and seek advice if needed.
- Liaise with professionals including social workers, personal advisers, accommodation providers, health care services, foster carers and solicitors in order to advocate effectively for young people.
- Carry out relevant research in order to more effectively support young people.
- Understand your responsibilities regarding safeguarding and data protection and use this to inform your work with BLF – identifying and responding appropriately to safeguarding and protection issues arising through casework.
- Maintain confidentiality and clear boundaries in all aspects of the role.

- Passion for the role and commitment to our aims and values.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to ‘sell’ an idea.
- Previous experience of fundraising in the charity sector and/or at a community level.
- The ability to build and maintain relationships.
- Highly motivated and pro-active.
- Good organisational and project management skills.
- Able to work as part of a team.
- Passion for supporting displaced young people to grow, develop and belong.
- Excellent English communication skills in person, by phone, and in writing.
- Experience of keeping and maintaining accurate records.
- Good awareness of safeguarding issues.
- Good level of IT skills.
- Enhanced DBS certification (child & adult workforce).
And experience in one or more of the following:
- Awareness of conflict and migration issues and sensitive to cultural issues.
- Strong understanding and empathy of the effects displacement has upon young people.
- Good knowledge of policy and legislation affecting displaced young people.
- Understanding of the UK care system and processes.
